NOW OPEN: THREE PhD FELLOWSHIP POSITIONS AT WACCBIP

The West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) is pleased to announce three open PhD fellowship positions for the 2018-2019 enrollment; two in Host-Pathogen Interactions (offered in partnership with the University of Copenhagen), and another in Human Genetics (offered in partnership with the University of Cape Town).

The positions are available at the University of Ghana, and successful fellows will have access to all the resources and facilities available at WACCBIP and at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR). Fellows will also receive research training for up to six months at our partner institutions at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark or at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

Fellowships cover tuition fees at the University of Ghana; a monthly stipend (living/accommodation); research supplies and reagents; travel, subsistence, and other costs related for the research training visit to Denmark/South Africa; and other related costs (such as international conferences, courses and workshops).

Applicants will be expected to hold a relevant master's degree, have experience in molecular research methods, and be interested in working on one of the following research project areas:

Host-Pathogen Interactions

    1. The molecular basis of adhesion of P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes in the pathogenesis of, and protective immune response to, cerebral malaria in children

    1. The role of soluble host factors in evasion of immune-mediated destruction of P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes

Human Genetics

    1. Investigating genetic markers of non-syndromic hearing impairment in Africa
